In response to the growth opportunities available to the port, Scrabster Harbour Trust drew up a blueprint for further development of the harbour. The key target markets are as follows:
The blueprint identified three major developments.
The overall cost for the development programme is projected at £50 million. In the period since September 2007 the Trust has worked hard to progress the programme and the latest position on each project is set out below. An aerial overview of the areas to be developed is included in the Information Pack available from the download section.
Following a competitive tendering exercise, Jacobs UK were appointed as consulting engineers to prepare a feasibility study on the preferred options for the Phase 1 redevelopment. The feasibility study was completed in October 2008 with the preferred option being the creation of a two berth wedged shaped pier.
The key features of the developments are as follows:
The project has now moved to outline design and tender stage with a view to awarding a Design and Construct contract in the summer of 2009. The anticipated completion date for the new multi-purpose facility is April -August 2011.
A feasibility study on the possible options for development of the deepwater basin is expected to be commissioned in the near future.
In April 2008, the Trust acquired 30 acres of farm land at nearby Scrabster Farm. The land is zoned for industrial use in the Caithness Local plan. Outline planning permission has been received for installation of servicing, roads and drainage to the site.
The intention is to develop an industrial estate to complement activities at the port.
A bird's eye overview showing the extent of the site, its proximity to the port and road connection to the port can be viewed in the information pack in the download section. The distance from the site to the harbour is 0.7 miles. The carriage way road width is 6-7 metres.
